The Keukenhof attracts a huge international crowd today. It is Mid-April 2015. I meet Chinese, Spanish, German and American folks. The atmosphere is relaxed as we enter the tulip garden of Amsterdam. This garden is the world’s second largest flower garden after Dubai’s Miracle Garden.
Milllion flowering bulbs
Each year 500 flower bulbs growers plant millions of flower bulbs in Keukenhof. A river of colours floats over an area of 32 hectares. And thousands of people go with the flow. Some say Keukenhof in Spring is the most beautiful garden in the world. Today – 18 april 2015 – we see an overwhelming variety of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. The Netherlands export up to 3.6 billion bulbs a year. Mainly to the USA. The tulip is good for more than half of the bulb area which is totally about 23.2 thousand hectares.
The idea of the founders of the Keukenhof was to present a flower show where growers from all over the Netherlands and Europe could show off their hybrids – and help the Dutch export industry. Holland is the world’s largest exporter of flowers. The Keukenhof is in a small town called Lisse. About 30 minutes by car from Amsterdam in an area called the “Dune and Bulb Region”. Boats depart from the windmill in the park taking people out on a tour through the tulip fields. And if a boat trip is not enough you can also book a trip in the legendary DC-3 Dakota Princess Amalia and see the tulip fields from the air. Holland is world-famous for its flowers. B
Keukenhof is open annually from mid-March to mid-May. The best time to view the flower-fields in the Netherlands between the end of April and in the beginning of May.
Address Keukenhof gardens: navigate to: Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse or take a train to Lisse.
The Keukenhof is near the Railway Station in the village.
Castle the Keukenhof is situated opposite the impressive garden called Keukenhof. In the Castle you find magnificent art treasures. The Chinese and Japanese porcelain e.g. is shown in the 17th century style and exhibited in a unique and specially built cabinet, with an exuberant chimney. But let’s forget the Castle for a moment and focus on tulips. Plan your visit to Holland carefully if you want to see blossoming tulips in the Keukenhof and the endless tulip fields along the western coast near the villages Lisse, Hillegom and Schagen in the north. When you are struck by flower-power the best time to visit Holland is between April 15 and May 15. Undoubtedly, and not only because of the tulip-season this is the best time of the year to visit Holland.
