Have you ever heard or seen something so funny? In Utrecht, a city in the middle of the Netherlands, there is a unique, a one of a kind worldwide special shoelace store, they only sell shoelaces. This store is called “The Lace Store? or so we say “De Veterwinkel”.

Unique, the one and only Lace store in the world

This unique lace shop can be found on the edge of the center of Utrecht. In addition to the store, there is also an extensive online shop for all possible types of laces. I didn’t know there are so many types of laces. I found the Veter store by chance and the first time I visited this store I was totally amazed. I couldn’t imagine that there were so many types of laces. Round laces, flat laces, leather laces, and many, many more types of laces. According to the owner, there are more than 550 different types/colors and types of laces from the roll, which can be made to any desired length.

From solid color laces to lace with all kinds of designs like hearts, stars, leopard print, camouflage, fruits, vegetables, rainbows, animals, dinosaurs, birds, snakes, insects, but also more trendy designs such as miffy variants, name it and they will probably have it. Glitter, nice and shining, even lightning lace, like LED, Glow in the Dark, and moving light lace. Furthermore, there are even art laces, inspired by world-famous paintings such as Piet Mondrian and Vincent van Gogh for sale. These laces are custom-made. Whatever laces you are looking for, you will certainly find them at Dé Veterwinkel.

From Shoemaker to shoelace shop | Family business

This store has been in existence since 1918 and was a shoemaker’s shop for a hundred years until the current owner John Versteeg decided to focus entirely on shoelaces. “John started with thirty species; now there are more than 550. Furthermore, as far as we know, this is the only store in the world that sells only laces. Dé Veterwinkel is a real family business: “The owner John has taken over the company from his father, and that in turn from his father. The current owner John works together with his wife Anja and son-in-law Bálint, who also wants to take over this unique company in due course.

Special shoelace for special shoes

In addition to safety, this store works with a safety certificate. The laces have the OEKO-TEX®’s STANDARD 100 certificate.

What more is there to do in Utrecht?

First, Utrecht is a century-old city in the center of the Netherlands. Second, the city was built around the Dom tower. Third, nowadays it is a historic and modern city with hundreds of monuments and architectural buildings. In this university town live loads of young students, therefore it’s a trendy city. The city has a car-free center. Everybody rides a bike. What makes Utrecht unique? Beautiful canals with extraordinary wharf cellars, housing cafés, and terraces by the water makes Utrecht worth visiting. Due to and knowing all this, you must see Utrecht!
