Hoorn the Netherlands, was once the wealthiest community in the Netherlands. In 1356, Hoorn paid a pile of gold to a German Duke to obtain “City Rights” among which was the right to exploit a market and build a wall around town. Visit the monumental city center, and you will see immediately the traces of wealth and a flamboyant history. Nowadays, Hoorn wrestles with its colonial past and the traces of the former whaling hunt. Nevertheless, the city center hosts interesting festivals, a fleet of ancient sailing boats, and a crowd of tireless shoppers looking for a good restaurant. Just a stone’s throw from the city center are the extensive marinas.

Colonial past Hoorn the Netherlands in the West Frisian Museum
For those interested in the history of Hoorn and the region’s local history, the Westfries Museum is a must-see. Discover artifacts and exhibits that chronicle the development of Hoorn and the surrounding West Friesland area. The maritime heritage and the role of Hoorn City during the Dutch Golden Age (16th century) is not as nice as it seems. Genocide in the East Indies, slave trade, racism, and piracy have shamelessly contributed to the prosperity and wealth of the city of Hoorn.

In front of the West Frisian Museum stands a statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Some say this man does not deserve a statue as under his command in 1621, the Banda Massacre took place, resulting in the killing and the depopulation of the Banda Island of Lontor (present-day Banda Besar). So, the Dutch conquest of the Banda Islands started with a massacre. This historic event marks the beginning of the glorious Dutch “Golden Age” as the spice trade took off.
