Pinksteren, also known as Pentecost, is a Christian holiday celebrated fifty days after Easter. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, marking the birth of the Christian Church. This event enabled the apostles to speak in various languages and spread the message of Christianity. Pentecost is a time for Christians to reflect on the Holy Spirit’s role in their faith. It is observed with church services, prayers, and sometimes festive gatherings.
Pentecost is a lengthy, free holiday weekend
Pentacos is celebrated in late spring so probably the weather is more than okay and loads of nice things are to be done, for instance, Pinkpop Festival, one of the oldest festivals in the Netherlands with a more than great programme. In the Netherlands we don’t say lengthy free holiday weekend, we say a long free weekend.

The Pentecost weekend starts on Saturday, May 18. On Sunday, May 19, and Monday, May 20, most supermarkets will be open, especially in the bigger cities. There is a lot to do during this long weekend. Pentecost, or as we say “Pinksteren,” is a time when most people have time off work and schools are closed. Normal life will resume on Tuesday, May 21.
